FLEEING

-Having a sense of humor, -said master Kuso- that will suffice for small things.
- And to avoid the fear of life?
- You must flee.
- I thought I had to follow the path of Buddha.
- The Buddha Way is the flee. He fled from his family, fled from his obligations, he fled from society. Buddha was only waiting for death. Meanwhile, he fled from life.


-Maestro, -dijo el joven Nan Do- ¿qué debo hacer para evitar el miedo?
-Tener sentido del humor, -respondió el maestro Kuso- eso bastará para las pequeñas cosas
- ¿Y para evitar el miedo a la vida?
- Debes huir
- Pensé que debía seguir el camino de Buda.
- El camino de Buda es la huida. Huyó de su familia, huyó de sus obligaciones, huyó de la sociedad. Buda sólo esperaba la muerte. Entre tanto huyó de la vida.

FEAR

SINSHUI: "Under the Quilt" (1931)

A disciple asked the master Kuso:
- Sensei, which is the greatest enemy of the Way?
- The fear. It's impossible to live fearfully.

Un discípulo preguntó al maestro Kuso:

- Sensei, ¿cuál es el mayor enemigo de la Vía?
- El miedo. Es imposible vivir con miedo.

SATORI

RAKUZAN: "Early Spring" (1930)

One day the young disciple Nando asked:

-Sensei, you say there isn't satori, then what kind of enlightenment found Buddha under the sacred tree?
-You should ask this question to the Buddha -said Kuso.

Un día, el joven discípulo Nandó preguntó:
-Maestro, usted dice que no hay satori, entonces ¿qué clase de iluminación encontró Buda bajo el árbol sagrado?
-Esa pregunta deberías hacérsela al Buda -respondió Kuso.

VOID AND INFINITE

HASUI: "Ushibori in evening" (1930)

One day the young Nando asked the master Kuso:
- Sensei, if in Zen there is nothing to learn or to teach, what offers the Zen?
- Just a great emptiness -said Kuso.
- And what I can do with the void, sensei?
- Fill it with the infinite.
Nando, was silent for a moment and then said:
- Where to find the infinite, sensei?
- Within you, only within you.

Un día, el joven Nando preguntó al maestro Kuso:
- Maestro, si en el Zen no hay nada que aprender ni que enseñar, ¿qué ofrece el Zen?
- Sólo un gran vacío- respondió Kuso.
- Y qué puedo hacer con el vacío, maestro?
- Llenarlo con el infinito.
Nando, guardó silencio un momento y luego dijo:
- Dónde encontraré el infinito, maestro?
- Dentro de ti, solamente dentro de ti.

THE GREAT TRUTH

SHIRO: "Misty evening at Shinobazu pond"

The young Nan-Do approached the master Kuso and said:
- Sensei, I want to learn the Zen
- In Zen there is nothing to teach and nothing to learn -said Kuso
- Then what is the mission of a Zen master?
- Disclose that great truth

El joven Nan Do se acercó al maestro Kuso y le dijo:
- Sensei, quiero aprender el Zen
- En el Zen no hay nada que enseñar y nada que aprender -respondío Kuso
- Entonces ¿cuál es la misión de un maestro Zen?
- Revelar esa gran verdad.
